Frequently asked

Do I need an account?

No. There's nothing to sign up for: open Painting Desk and add a kit. Your collection is stored on your device and, if you're signed in to iCloud, in your own private iCloud database.

How do I sync between my iPhone and iPad?

Sign in to the same Apple Account on both and Painting Desk syncs through iCloud by itself. Settings › Your data in the app shows whether everything is up to date. If your iCloud storage is full, each device keeps working and the others catch up once there's room.

Where are my photos kept?

In your Photos library, in an album called Painting Desk. The app keeps a small thumbnail of each one and remembers which kit and stage it belongs to. If you'd rather not give Painting Desk access to your library, it keeps the photos itself.

Which paint brands are included?

Over 4,700 paints from ten brands, including Vallejo, The Army Painter, AK Interactive, Scale75, Green Stuff World, P3, Tamiya, Kimera Kolors and Liquitex. Choose the ranges you collect in Settings › Paints so suggestions stick to paints you'd actually buy. Anything missing can be added as a custom paint with its own colour, and if a whole range is missing, email us.

What's the quickest way to add my paints?

The swatch grid: pick a brand and range, then tap every pot you own. You can also scan pots with the camera, which reads the labels as you move along the rack, or import a CSV from another app or a spreadsheet.

How accurate are the colour matches?

Close, not exact. Paint makers don't publish exact colour values, so Painting Desk's come from their product photography, calibrated across the whole catalogue. Every match shows its ΔE (the colour difference) and a word for how close it is, and a metallic, wash or primer is only ever matched with its own kind.

Can I get my data out?

Yes, whenever you like. Settings › Your data exports your paints and kits as CSV, and everything as a JSON archive, with history and thumbnails, that restores exactly. Full-size photos are already in your Photos library.

What is the painting clock?

An optional timer for the hours you spend at the desk. Start it from a kit; it shows on the Lock Screen while it runs and stops when you end the session. It never starts by itself. Without it, Painting Desk still knows how long each kit spent in each stage, because every stage move is dated.

Does Painting Desk have ads?

No pop-ups, no video ads and no tracking. The Desk may show one small card recommending another independent app. The privacy policy explains how that works.

Is it only for wargaming?

No. It's for anything you paint: wargaming armies, historicals, RPG figures, busts and scale models. System and faction are free-text tags, so nothing assumes a particular game.

Which devices does Painting Desk run on?

iPhone and iPad, on iOS 27 or iPadOS 27 or later. There's no Android version.

Reporting a bug

Email us with as much of this as you can:

  • Your device and its iOS version (Settings › General › About)
  • The Painting Desk version, from Settings › About in the app
  • What happened, and what you expected to happen
  • The steps that make it happen again, if you know them
  • A screenshot or screen recording

Painting Desk sends nothing to us by itself, so we only see what you include.
